Grey Abbey
Amble through the ruins of the 12th century Cistercian Abbey, the only Abbey in Ireland founded by a woman and the first example of Gothic architecture on the island. As you walk around the Abbey, find out what life was like as a monk in the 12th century, what monks ate and how they managed to communicate even when they weren’t allowed to talk! This historic building dating from 1193 is one of Ireland’s most impressive examples of early gothic architecture.
The remains of the Abbey are situated in beautiful parkland on the outskirts of the village. Connect to nature in the reconstructed Grey Abbey Physic Garden where over 40 herbs & plants that the monks used to produce their cures/medicines still thrive. Access is generally available dawn to dusk most of the year and Friends of the Abbey can offer information and guided tours on site from mid March to the end of October. Fully guided tours are bookable in advance and complemented by an interactive exhibition centre offering information on how the Abbey was built, the monks’ life and their impact on the surrounding area.
